The interconnection between galaxy mergers, AGN activity, and rapid quenching of star formation in simulated post-merger galaxies

چکیده
We investigate the role of galaxy mergers on supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion and star formation quenching in three state-of-the-art cosmological simulations with contrasting physics models: EAGLE, Illustris IllustrisTNG. find that recently coalesced 'post-mergers' all have elevated SMBH rates by factors ~2-5. However, rapid (within 500 Myr coalescence) is rare, incidence 0.4% Illustris, 4.5% EAGLE 10% The rarity post-mergers results from substantial gas reservoirs remain intact after merger. do successfully quench tend to be those had both low pre-merger fractions as well experience largest losses. Although quenched fraction still compared a control sample non-mergers two IllustrisTNG 11 EAGLE. Conversely, rarer than their control. Recent observational Ellison et al. found at least 30 times more common post-mergers, significantly higher excess any simulations. Our results, therefore, indicate whilst merger-induced widespread prediction simulations, its link depends sensitively models, none subgrid models studied here can fully capture connection between seen observations.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملStar formation and AGN activity in SDSS cluster galaxies
We investigate the recent and current star formation activity of galaxies as function of distance from the cluster center in a sample of 521 SDSS clusters at z < 0.1. We characterize the recent star formation history by the strength of the 4000Å break and the strength of the Balmer absorption lines, and thus probe the star formation history over the last ∼ 2Gyr. We show that when the Brightest ...
متن کاملSimulated Molecular Gas Emission in Galaxy Mergers with Embedded AGN
We investigate the effect of embedded active galactic nuclei (AGN) in galaxy mergers on the CO molecular line emission by combining non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) radiative transfer calculations with hydrodynamic simulations. We find that AGN feedback energy in gas rich galaxy mergers can contribute to large molecular outflows which may be detectable via velocityintegrated emission c...
متن کاملSimulated Molecular Outflows in Galaxy Mergers with Embedded AGN
We study the effects of feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) on emission from molecular gas in galaxy mergers by combining hydrodynamic simulations that include black holes with a three-dimensional, non–local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) radiative transfer code. We find that molecular clouds entrained in AGN winds produce an extended CO morphology with significant off-nuclear emission...
متن کاملStar formation and structure formation in galaxy interactions and mergers
A number of theoretical and simulation results on star and structure formation in galaxy interactions and mergers is reviewed, and recent hydrodynamic simulations are presented. The role of gravity torques and ISM turbulence in galaxy interactions, in addition to the tidal field, is highlighted. Interactions can drive gas inflows towards the central kpc and trigger a central starburst, the inte...
